What does “se pá” mean in Brazilian Portuguese slang?
In São Paulo slang, se pá means “maybe” or “who knows” — nothing to do with pá, “shovel.” It emerged in 1980s São Paulo rap and funk, when youth culture reshaped standard Portuguese into something faster and more clipped. One theory traces pá to the French je sais pas (“I don’t know”), worn down to a single syllable as it crossed into Brazilian slang.
This video is a rapid translation guide for paulistano slang, and se pá threads through the delivery exactly how it’s used on the street — dropped mid-sentence as a casual hedge, not a formal “perhaps.” Because it started in genres with low social prestige, se pá took decades to reach the mainstream; it’s now common across Brazil, but many older or more formal speakers still register it as informal — better for a group chat than a job interview.
