What does “por incrível que pareça” mean in Portuguese?
Por incrível que pareça means “believe it or not.” It is built on a pattern worth stealing whole: por + adjective + que + subjunctive, which concedes a point just before you push past it. Swap the adjective and it keeps working — por estranho que pareça (“strange as it may seem”), por mais que eu tente (“however hard I try”), por pior que seja (“however bad it is”).
The subjunctive is obligatory: pareça, never parece. Brazilians use the phrase as a small conversational drumroll before an admission, which is exactly its job in this morning-routine clip, where it introduces a mild confession about loving the smell of coffee: por incrível que pareça, é muito bom.
