What does “manteiga de cacau” mean in Brazilian Portuguese?

Ask a Brazilian for lip balm and you will be handed manteiga de cacau, literally “cocoa butter.” Cocoa butter is the fat pressed out of the cacao bean — the same fat that makes white chocolate — and it was the classic base for lip sticks, so the ingredient’s name took over the product’s. It is what people say for the little tube in a bag, whatever it is actually made of.

The formal labels are protetor labial and hidratante labial, but everyday speech prefers manteiga de cacau, and the verb that goes with it is passar: deixa eu passar uma manteiga de cacau. The clip glosses it the way you would for a child — isso aqui é de passar na boca, “this one goes on your mouth” — right between the zíper, the carregador and the fones de ouvido.
