What does “morro” mean in Rio de Janeiro?

Morro is a hill: smaller than a montanha, bigger than a bump. In Rio de Janeiro it carries a second, inseparable meaning — the favela built up its slopes. Subir o morro is going up into the community; lá no morro means up there, inside it. Rio’s first favela grew on the Morro da Providência in the 1890s, and that pattern went on to shape the whole city.
