What does “pera aí” mean in Portuguese?

Pera aí is what Brazilians actually say out loud for “hold on” or “wait a sec.” It’s the squashed spoken form of espera aí (“wait there”): in fast speech the es- drops away and you’re left with pera aí. You won’t see it on formal signs, but in conversation it’s everywhere — buying a moment, stopping someone mid-sentence, or signalling “wait, I just figured something out.”

It contracts even further in writing to a single word, peraí, and you’ll hear regional twists like peraê. Built from esperar (“to wait”) plus the everyday adverb aí (“there”), it works as a discourse marker — the Portuguese cousin of English “hang on a sec.” In the clip, the mum is untangling a phone mix-up with her daughter and drops a “Pera aí, eu já sei” — “Hold on, I’ve got it” — the exact beat where pera aí means “wait, it just clicked.”
