What does “쌤” mean in Korean?

쌤 (ssaem)
Korean teacher slang
casual, affectionate shortening of 선생님 (“teacher”)

This podcaster introduces herself as 미나쌤, “Teacher Mina” — using 쌤, the everyday contraction of 선생님 (seonsaengnim, “teacher”). Students started clipping the formal title down for speed, and the shortened form stuck so widely that teachers now use it about themselves too, the way “Ms. Kim” might casually become “Miss K.” Attach 쌤 to any name and you’ve made an affectionate, informal teacher title.

쌤 likely began as a regional (Gyeongsang-dialect) slurring of 선생님's syllables, and by the 1980s it had spread nationwide among students, helped along by its accidental resemblance to the English name “Sam.” Today it’s standard classroom and online-lesson Korean — informal enough for students, common enough that teachers introduce themselves with it, exactly as this podcast host does.
