What does “জয়ধ্বনি” mean in Bengali?

জয়ধ্বনি (joydhoni)
Bengali victory-cheer word
a joyous victory shout — জয় (victory) + ধ্বনি (sound)

জয়ধ্বনি (joydhoni) is the sound a crowd makes the moment danger passes and the good side wins — জয় means “victory,” ধ্বনি means “sound” or “cry,” so together it’s literally a “victory sound.” It’s less a specific chant than the general Bengali word for any spontaneous shout of triumph: the noise a whole village, stadium, or procession makes together, all at once, when there’s finally something to celebrate.

In this retelling of the Durga myth, a child-goddess’s courage scares off a band of raiders threatening her village — and the moment they flee, the grateful villagers erupt into জয়ধ্বনি. The same জয়- root anchors bigger words too: জয় বাংলা (“Victory to Bengal”) was the rallying cry of Bangladesh’s 1971 independence movement, and pujo crowds shout জয় মা দুর্গা (“victory to Mother Durga”) during Durga Puja — the everyday Bengali way to cheer anything from a goddess’s rescue to a nation’s freedom.
