What does “muñeca” mean in Spanish: wrist or doll?

Muñeca is your wrist, the joint between hand and forearm. It is also a doll, the toy. Both senses are everyday Spanish: me duele la muñeca is “my wrist hurts,” and una muñeca de trapo is a rag doll. The two senses are usually traced to an old word for a bump or knob, which would fit the little bone that sticks out at the wrist, though how the doll came to share the name is less certain. Context always makes it clear, and a muñeco (masculine) is a figure, puppet or snowman.
