In Romanian, mâncare is both “food” in general and “a dish” you order — one word for the whole eating-out exchange. It’s built straight from the verb a mânca (“to eat”) plus -re, so it literally names “the eating.” Knowing it unlocks the everyday question ce mâncare ai? (“what food do you have?”), the single phrase that gets you fed almost anywhere in the country.

The root goes back to Latin manducare, “to chew” — the same source that gives French manger and Italian mangiare, where Spanish and Portuguese instead chose comer.
