Ukrainian chef Yevhen Klopotenko, who has spent the last decade reframing Ukrainian cuisine on its own terms, calls raw sweet corn дар богів (“gift of the gods”) in this clip. The phrase exists across Slavic and Greek traditions, but Klopotenko’s deployment turns a humble cob into something worth slowing down to appreciate.

Дар богів shows up across Ukrainian food writing and cooking content as a small piece of theater. A tomato in season, a perfect potato, a child’s first pierogi: any of them might be called дар богів with mock-seriousness or genuine gratitude. The phrase is one of the small markers of Ukrainian rhetorical play.
