What does “beat” mean in Romanian?

beat / beată
adjective
Drunk; a false friend for English speakers (nothing to do with 'beat')

Recounting a chaotic night, the vlogger admits “eram un pic cam prea beat,” “I was a bit too drunk.” For an English speaker beat is a trap: in Romanian it has nothing to do with rhythm or hitting. Beat (masculine) and beată (feminine) simply mean “drunk.” The verb is a se îmbăta, “to get drunk,” and the morning after is mahmureală, a hangover.

The clip is a relatable disaster: waking in a random hotel in the centru vechi (old town), no memory of the night, ordering a Bolt (the ride app Romanians use like Uber), and staggering to work on barely two hours' sleep, muttering the ironic mantra “e totul bine” (“everything’s fine”). Learn beat and you’ll never misread this very common word.
