What is an “angkringan” in Indonesia?

On a family day out to a mountain and a fishing village, the vlogger eyes the food stalls: «makan di angkringan tuh susah aja kayaknya bawa bocil» (“eating at an angkringan is just hard with a kid in tow”). An angkringan is a Javanese street-side food cart, low stools, a tarp, and famously cheap plates of nasi kucing (“cat rice,” tiny portions).

Born in Yogyakarta and Solo, the angkringan is where students and workers eat, smoke, and talk late into the night. The clip is a tour of casual Indonesian too: jalan-jalan (“to stroll”), kulineran (“food-touring”), bocil (“little kid”). Street food, with its own vocabulary.
