Why does papaya have three names in Indonesia?

Wandering a morning market, the vlogger spots a familiar fruit and reels off its aliases: «gandul guys alias pepaya alias kates» (“gandul, you guys, a.k.a. pepaya, a.k.a. kates”). One fruit, three names: pepaya is standard Indonesian, while gandul and kates come from Javanese.

It’s a tiny lesson in how Indonesia’s hundreds of local languages feed into daily speech, so a market run is quietly multilingual. The clip also overflows with reduplication, that very Indonesian habit of doubling words: jalan-jalan (“strolling”), belanja-belanja (“shopping”), imut-imut (“teeny-cute”). Same papaya, many tongues.
