What is Dutch “pakjesavond”?

Pakjesavond is the climax of Dutch Sinterklaas season: the evening of December 5, when families gather and exchange gifts wrapped with handmade surprises (often elaborate cardboard sculptures hiding the actual present). Each gift comes with a poem (Sinterklaasgedicht), traditionally written from Sinterklaas himself, gently teasing the recipient. Dutch families plan pakjesavond weeks in advance, drawing names from a hat for lootjestrekken and writing poems by hand. The evening is more central than Christmas in many Dutch households, and Dutch primary schools run mini-pakjesavonden in the days before, with kids leaving verlanglijstjes (wishlists) for the Sint.
