Bieb is the everyday Dutch nickname for bibliotheek (library), a clipped diminutive that turns the formal noun into something cosier. Dutch kids and adults overwhelmingly say naar de bieb gaan (going to the library) where the full word would feel stiff. The Netherlands runs over 800 public-library branches plus bibliotheekbussen (mobile libraries) that serve smaller villages. Membership is free for kids and cheap for adults, and most bieb-locations double as community hubs with reading corners, taalcafés, and study areas.
