Why is Wageningen famous in the Netherlands?
Wageningen is a small Dutch city in Gelderland with an outsized scientific footprint: it’s home to Wageningen University & Research (WUR), consistently ranked the world’s top university for agricultural and food sciences. Roughly half the city’s population is students or researchers, and Wageningen is also where the Dutch agritech industry incubates, where insect-protein companies like Protix started, and where the Dutch food-system reform debates happen. Wageningen is additionally the bevrijdingsstad: the WWII surrender of German forces in the Netherlands was signed there in May 1945.
