What does “Zusammengehörigkeit” mean in German?
People on the street name the things money cannot buy: “Liebe, Freundschaft, Zusammengehörigkeit.” This last word looks long, but it just means a sense of belonging — feeling that you are part of a group. It sits next to love and friendship, pointing to the warm feeling of being together with others. Once you know it is built from “zusammen” (together) and “gehören” (to belong), it makes instant sense.
In the clip: “Liebe, Freundschaft, Zusammengehörigkeit.” (Love, friendship, a sense of belonging.) The word is built from “zusammen” (together) and “gehören” (to belong), so the idea is “belonging together.” Plain examples: “In unserem Team gibt es ein starkes Gefühl von Zusammengehörigkeit.” (In our team there is a strong sense of belonging.) “Das Fest stärkt die Zusammengehörigkeit im Dorf.” (The festival makes the sense of belonging in the village stronger.) It is a warm, positive word for the bond people feel as a group. You will usually see it with “Gefühl von” (a feeling of) in front of it.
