What does “Winterschlaf” mean in German?

Winterschlaf is the deep winter sleep that animals like bears fall into — literally winter-sleep. But in German you hear it much more broadly: a whole region, a park, or even a mood can wake up aus dem Winterschlaf when spring arrives. That stretch from one sleeping bear to an entire landscape coming back to life is what makes the word so vivid. Picture anything that went quiet in the cold and is now stirring again.

“Die Natur erwacht langsam aber sicher aus dem Winterschlaf.” — “Nature is slowly but surely waking up from its winter sleep.” Der Igel hält Winterschlaf. — The hedgehog hibernates (sleeps through winter).
