What does “la neta” mean in Mexican Spanish?

La neta is Mexico’s word for the unvarnished truth. Drop it at the front of a sentence — la neta, no me gustaría estar ahí — and it works like “honestly” or “real talk.” It comes from neto/neta, “net, pure” (as in peso neto, net weight): the truth with everything else filtered out. As a question, ¿es neta? means “seriously? for real?”

On the MasterChef balcony, an eliminated contestant sizes up the finalists with it: “La neta, es que yo creo que no me gustaría estar ahí abajo en este momento.” Register check: it’s everyday colloquial Mexican — fine with friends and on TV, out of place in formal writing. The playful superlative la neta del planeta means “the absolute truth.”
