What does “siervuurwerk” mean in Dutch?

Dutch consumer fireworks split into two camps: siervuurwerk (decorative fireworks — cakes, fountains, Roman candles) and knalvuurwerk (bangers, purely for the noise). Since a 2020 ban, decorative siervuurwerk is essentially the only consumer fireworks people may still set off; bangers and rockets are prohibited, and heavy illegal items like cobra’s carry real fines. The distinction matters every Oud en Nieuw, when the kliklijn — a hotline for reporting violations — stays open all night.

The word builds on sier- (“ornamental, decorative”), the same root in sieraad (jewellery) and sierlijk (elegant). In the sketch the dad makes exactly this Dutch distinction: “dit is siervuurwerk, hier moet je naar kijken” — this is siervuurwerk, you look at it. His kid ignores him, heads off to light cobra’s (“dit gaat knallen”), and the kliklijn gets a call. The sketch ends with the classic Oud en Nieuw punchline about fingers — dark Dutch humour that captures why the ban exists.
