Kaas met appelstroop is one of Dutch boterhammen-tradition’s quietly iconic combinations: a slice of cheese (usually mild jong belegen or Goudse) topped with a thick layer of appelstroop (a dark, slow-boiled apple-and-pear syrup made in Limburg). The combination tastes savory-sweet and rich, and shows up most often in Limburg lunches, Dutch broodtrommels, and on the country’s boerenbroodspeciaaltjes menus. Rinse Appelstroop and Limburgse Appelstroop Canisius are the standard supermarket brands. Dutch kids inherit the combo from grandparents in the south.
