What does “megéri” mean in Hungarian?

megéri
Hungarian "is it worth it?" verb
“it’s worth it,” “it pays off” — from ér, “to be worth,” with a plain infinitive

Megéri is the everyday Hungarian way to say something is worth doing. It comes from ér, “to be worth,” plus the prefix meg-, and it takes a plain infinitive: megéri korábban kelni, “it’s worth getting up earlier.” It weighs whether something pays off — the effort against the reward — so you reach for it any time you’re deciding if a thing is really worth it.

The handy twist is the negative. In a “no” sentence the meg- prefix splits off and moves after the verb: nem éri meg, “it’s not worth it.” You’ll hear both sides here — nyáron megéri korábban kelni (“in summer it’s worth getting up earlier”), then télen nem éri meg (“in winter it’s not worth it”), because before 7am it’s still dark and cold. Common fixed phrases are megéri az árát (“it’s worth the price”) and megéri a fáradságot (“it’s worth the trouble”).
