What does “beletesz” mean in Hungarian?

Hungarian rarely says “put it in” with a separate little word. The direction gets welded to the front of the verb: beletesz (“puts it into”), kivesz (“takes it out”), visszatesz (“puts it back”). Change the prefix and you change the journey, while the verb itself — tesz, “to put” — stands still. Three prefixes buy you a dozen verbs.

The prefixes are directional and endlessly recombinable: bele- into, ki- out, be- in, le- down, fel- up, vissza- back, el- away. They also detach and jump behind the verb in negatives and questions — beleteszem a kosárba, but nem teszem bele.
