Why does Hungarian have two words for red?

Hungarian splits red in two. Piros is the everyday, cheerful red — piros alma, a red apple; piros autó, a red car. Vörös is the darker, weightier one, used for blood, wine, hair, foxes and politics: vörösbor, vörös haj, Vörös Hadsereg. Linguists studying colour vocabulary treat Hungarian as the textbook case of a language with two basic terms for red.

The dividing line is felt rather than ruled. Broadly, piros leans towards made things and bright shades while vörös leans towards nature, intensity and gravity — although vörös szőnyeg (red carpet) and piros tulipán cheerfully break the pattern. Hungarian builds most of its other colour names out of objects: narancssárga is “orange-yellow,” rózsaszín is “rose-colour.”
