What is “une serpillière” and why does its name change across France?

Une serpillière is the coarse cloth you use to wash a floor — what English calls a floor cloth or mop rag. It’s the textbook standard word, but it’s one of the most famously region-split items in French: ask for the same thing in the north and it’s a wassingue, in the Rhône-Alpes a panosse, elsewhere a cinse, a patte or a toile. A small object, a map of France’s dialects.

The northern wassingue comes from Flemish wassching, “the act of washing” — a loanword from the Belgian border. Panosse dominates Franco-Provençal areas around Lyon and into Switzerland. So while serpillière is what you’ll find in a dictionary or a Paris textbook, the word a French person actually uses can instantly place where they grew up.
