What does “ticket de caisse” mean in French?

The slip of paper a shop prints when you pay is le ticket de caisse. La caisse is the checkout, so it is literally the “till ticket,” and it is what staff ask for before an exchange or a refund. Un reçu exists too, but it usually means a written acknowledgement that money changed hands rather than the printed strip from a supermarket.

La caisse is worth having on its own: it is the checkout counter, the cash register, and by extension the shop’s money — passer à la caisse means to go and pay. The person behind it is un caissier or une caissière, built from the same word.
