What does “que dis-tu de” mean in French?
When you point at one choice among many and want to suggest it, French says Que dis-tu de celui-ci ? It means “How about this one?” Word for word it is “What do you say about this one?” The pattern is Que dis-tu de + a thing: Que dis-tu de ce film ? (“How about this movie?”). It is a quick, friendly way to share an idea and ask a friend what they think.
In the clip, two students compare cheap hotels and one finally points at a good one: “Que dis-tu de celui-ci ? Le prix est bon.” (“How about this one? The price is good.”) Celui-ci means “this one” (masculine); celle-ci is “this one” (feminine), for example a chambre (room): Que dis-tu de celle-ci ? The verb form dis-tu uses inversion, which sounds a little polished but stays normal in this short set phrase. In very casual speech you may also hear Tu dis quoi de celui-ci ? or simply Et celui-ci ? A close cousin is Qu’en dis-tu ?, “What do you say (about it)?”, where en replaces the thing you already mentioned.
