What does “lait végétal” mean when ordering coffee in French?

Le lait végétal — literally “plant milk” — is the standard French umbrella term for any non-dairy milk. Where English juggles “oat milk,” “plant-based” and “dairy-free,” French keeps it tidy: végétal covers all of it, then you name the plant. The two you’ll hear most ordering coffee are lait d’avoine (oat) and lait de soja (soy). It’s the exact phrase to know for a café in France.

In the clip the customer waves off dairy with a casual pas de vache — “no cow” — and the barista offers en lait végétal, on a lait d’avoine, lait de soja. Note that French calls it lait even though EU labelling reserves “milk” for the animal product, so on packaging you’ll often see boisson à l’avoine; spoken café French happily says lait d’avoine anyway.
