شو فصلك المفضل؟ حديث بسيط عن فصول السنة

What does “شو” (shu) mean in Levantine Arabic?
Standard Arabic uses two “what” words: ماذا (māḏā) before verbs and ما (mā) before nouns. Levantine Arabic collapses both into a single word: شو (shu). It is everywhere in Syrian and Lebanese speech — the first “what” a Levantine dialect learner needs to recognise, and one of the clearest markers that you are not in textbook MSA territory.
The clip opens with a single question repeated to multiple speakers — شو فصلك المفضل؟ (shu faslak al-mufaddal? — “what’s your favourite season?”) — which gives you the word in context six times before the video ends. Etymologically, شو traces back to أيّ شيء (ayyu shay’in, “which thing”), a colloquial contraction that compressed over centuries into the crisp monosyllable used today across Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine. Once you have it, a whole family of phrases unlocks: شو بدّك (shu biddak, “what do you want?”), شو في (shu fi, “what’s going on?”), and the slangy standalone شو؟ that functions as a casual “what’s up?” between friends.
