What does “عم” mean in Levantine Arabic?

Drop عم in front of any Levantine verb and it becomes present continuous: شو عم تعمل؟ is “what is [she] doing?” — not “what does she do?” That one syllable carries all the work that English handles with is/are … -ing, and MSA handles with context alone. It is absent from Modern Standard Arabic entirely, which makes it one of the clearest single signals that the Arabic you are hearing is Levantine.

The particle is a reduced form of عمّال (ʿammāl), itself from the root عمل (ʿamal, “to do/work”) — so at its core it means something like “busy doing.” In the clip, a voice quizzes the viewer with the same frame ten times in a row: شو عم تعمل البسينة؟ (“What is the cat doing?”) — each time with a different verb filling the slot: عم تلحث (is panting), عم تلعب (is playing), عم تاكل (is eating).
