What does “yaani eh” mean in Egyptian Arabic?

Egyptian Arabic has a short, everyday way to ask for clarification: يعني ايه؟ (yaʕni eh?), literally “meaning what?” The word يعني (“meaning, that is”) plus ايه (the Egyptian “what,” replacing MSA’s ماذا) becomes one of the most-used Egyptian phrases. Travelers, journalists, and Arabic learners hear it constantly: in markets when haggling, in interviews when reporters push back on an answer, in everyday conversation when something doesn’t quite click.
