What does “mashi” mean in Egyptian Arabic?

A dad surprises his kids with headphones, on one condition, and the whole exchange runs on one word: ماشي (māshi). «ماشي يا بابا» (“okay, dad”), the kids answer as they accept the deal. Literally “walking, going,” māshi is Egypt’s all-purpose “okay, fine, deal, got it,” and it greases almost every agreement in the dialect.

Tone does the work: a bright māshi means “sounds great,” a flat one means “fine, whatever,” and “māshi māshi” hurries someone along. It’s the cousin of طيب (ṭayyib) and تمام (tamām), and you’ll hear all three traded in a single conversation. Master māshi and you can agree to anything.
