What does the “-iya” ending mean in Hebrew?

ספרייה (sifriya)
Hebrew place-suffix
“library” — the ־ייה ending that turns a thing into a place

Tali works בספרייה, “in a library” — and the word is a little machine: ספר (sefer), “book,” plus the ending ־ייה, which turns a thing into the place where it happens. Once you spot it, Israeli street signs open up: מאפייה is a bakery (from מאפה, “pastry”), פיצרייה a pizzeria, עירייה the city hall (from עיר, “city”). One suffix, a whole map.

The book family alone is worth collecting: ספר “book,” ספרייה “library,” סופר “author,” ספרות “literature,” ספרן “librarian” — one root, five professions and places. Tali’s line to steal for yourself: כל שבוע אני קוראת ספר חדש — “every week I read a new book.”
