What does “你呢” mean in Chinese?

After introducing herself — her students, her yoga, her midnight bedtime — the teacher in this clip turns the camera around with two syllables: 你呢？ “And you?” The particle 呢 (ne) bounces the current topic back without repeating the question: 我是中国人，你呢？ — “I’m Chinese — you?” Whatever was just said, X + 呢 asks the same thing about X. It may be the cheapest complete sentence in Chinese.

The same particle asks “where is…?” out of thin air: 我的手机呢？ — “(so) where’s my phone?” Both uses share one logic: 呢 means “and what about X?”, with context filling in the rest. That’s why it needs no verb, no question word — just a topic and a raised eyebrow.
