What does “靠” mean in Chinese?

靠 (kào)
Chinese one-syllable multitool
“to lean on” — physically, and in the sense of relying on someone

In this metro prank, two guys fall “asleep” on strangers at once — 靠着肩膀睡着, dozing off leaning on a shoulder. 靠 (kào) starts physical — to lean against — and stretches naturally into trust: 靠朋友 is to rely on friends, 可靠 is dependable, and 靠谱 (kàopǔ) is the everyday word for “reliable, legit.” Someone you can 靠 is, quite literally, someone you could fall asleep on.

Book a train or window seat and you’ll use it again: 靠窗 (“against the window”). One register warning: shouted on its own, 靠! is a crude exclamation roughly like “damn!” — worth recognizing in shows and streams, not worth deploying. Context does all the work: leaned, relied, or cursed, it’s the same syllable.
