What does “я просто смотрю” mean in Russian?

я просто смотрю (ya prosto smotryu)
Russian retail deflection phrase
“I’m just looking” — the polite brush-off for a shop assistant

The moment a продавец-консультант (sales assistant) approaches with “Вам помочь?” (“Can I help you?”), Russian shoppers reach for the same two-word shield English speakers use: я просто смотрю — “I’m just looking.” The phrase pivots on смотреть (to look, to browse), which Russian keeps cleanly separate from купить (to buy). You’re not committing to anything; you’re just looking.

The full, most natural form is Нет, спасибо, я просто смотрю — “No, thank you, I’m just looking.” The teacher in the clip calls it her favourite shopping phrase and acts it out against the approaching assistant, which is exactly how you’d use it in any торговый центр (shopping centre) in Russia. Note that смотреть is imperfective: it signals an ongoing, open-ended action — no purchase in sight. The moment you pick something up and decide, the verb shifts: можно примерить? (“may I try this on?”) and eventually я куплю (“I’ll take it”).
