How does Polish name kitchen tools like “otwieracz”?

Polish names its gadgets by what they do. Take a verb, add a tool suffix, and you’re done: otwierać (to open) becomes otwieracz — an opener; wyciskać (to squeeze) becomes wyciskarka — the garlic press from this kitchen drawer. Then do + noun says what it’s for: otwieracz do wina (wine opener), wyciskarka do czosnku (garlic press). Decode the verb inside, and unlabeled kitchen drawers start reading like sentences.

The two suffixes split the work: -acz for hand tools (otwieracz — opener; zszywacz — stapler, from zszywać, to staple), -arka often for gadgets and machines (zmywarka — dishwasher, from zmywać, to wash up; drukarka — printer, from drukować). The clip’s drawer also holds a łopatka (spatula — “little shovel”) in plastic and wood, and the size pair duży nóż / nożyk — big knife, little knife.
