What does “na dwór” mean in Polish?
When the little girl heads out for her day, she goes na dwór — “outside,” literally “to the manor court.” Dwór originally meant a noble manor and its grounds, and the phrase for stepping out of the house kept that old picture. But say it in Kraków and someone may grin: southern Poland goes na pole — “out to the field” — instead. It’s Poland’s most famous regional split.
The divide is over a century old — linguists already mapped it in 1914: Kraków and Lesser Poland say na pole, while Warsaw, Poznań, and the rest say na dwór. Neither is a mistake; na dwór is simply the nationwide standard. The static version works the same way: na dworze means “outdoors” (“it’s cold out” = zimno na dworze), and in the south you’ll hear na polu.
