How does “chcę, żeby” work in Polish?

To want something for yourself, Polish uses an infinitive: chcę być — “I want to be.” But the moment you want something else to be a certain way, the sentence rebuilds itself: chcę, żeby + a verb that looks like past tense. Chcę, żeby był biały — “I want it to be white.” This dream-phone monologue repeats the pattern a dozen times, one wish per feature.

The verb after żeby isn’t really past — it’s Polish’s subjunctive-style form, and it agrees with the thing you’re wishing about: chcę, żeby telefon był tani (masculine był), chcę, żeby bateria była dobra (feminine była). The clip also uses the formal twin aby: chcę, aby mój telefon był ładny. Best wish of all: she wants the phone to cost ten złoty — about two euros.
