What do “zasłaniać” and “odsłaniać” mean?

Polish curtains are named for their job: zasłony are literally “the coverers,” from zasłaniać, “to cover up.” And to operate them you just swap the prefix: zasłaniam zasłony — I draw the curtains shut; odsłaniam zasłony — I open them. That za- (closing over) versus od- (away, undoing) pair is one of Polish’s most productive tricks: learn one verb, get its reverse for free.

Julia demonstrates the pair on her blue curtains: czasami zasłaniam, a czasami odsłaniam — and when she opens them, the room fills with światło słoneczne. The same flip works across the language: zakryć / odkryć (cover / uncover — and odkryć also means “to discover,” exactly like English dis-cover), zamknąć / otworzyć aside, even a monument gets odsłonięty — “unveiled.”
