What does “niespodzianka” mean in Polish?

Niespodzianka — surprise — carries its own definition inside: it comes from spodziewać się, “to expect,” negated. A surprise is literally “the un-expected thing.” And note the verb Polish pairs it with: you don’t give someone a surprise, you make one — zrobić komuś niespodziankę, exactly what the dad in this clip does by ordering a giant chocolate sphere for his daughter’s birthday.

The root keeps paying off: spodziewam się gości — “I’m expecting guests”; niespodziewanie — “unexpectedly”; tego się nie spodziewałem — “I didn’t see that coming,” the all-purpose reaction line. The clip’s melting reveal adds two more kitchen verbs to the haul: the sphere pękła (cracked) and began to rozpuszczać się (dissolve) in hot milk.
