What is “Pasquetta,” and why do Italians picnic on it?

This video runs through Easter foods, but the real standout word is Pasquetta — “little Easter,” Italy’s affectionate nickname for Lunedì dell’Angelo, Easter Monday. It’s a real public holiday, and by tradition Italians spend it outdoors: a countryside picnic or barbecue with family and friends, often eating leftovers from the day before.

The official name honors the angel who told the women at Christ’s tomb that he had risen. The picnic habit is newer — it caught on with wealthier families in the 19th century and became a nationwide custom once cars made day trips easy. The Italian state only made it an official holiday in 1947.
