What does “rosa” mean in Italian?

In Italian, “rosa” means the color pink and also the flower, a rose. The color name comes straight from the flower, since many roses are that shade. Most Italian color words change their ending to match the noun (a red house is “casa rossa,” red shoes are “scarpe rosse”). “Rosa” does not: it stays “rosa” no matter what. So you say “casa rosa,” “capelli rosa,” “scarpe rosa” — one form for everything.

You can hear it in the line “I miei capelli sono rosa” (My hair is pink). Notice that “capelli” is masculine and plural, yet the color stays “rosa” with no extra ending — a red one would force “rossi.” The word comes from Latin “rosa,” the flower, the same root behind English “rose.” A small group of Italian colors named after things work this way and stay fixed: “viola” (purple, from the violet flower) and “blu” (blue) also never change. So “il cielo diventa rosa” (the sky turns pink) and “una maglia rosa” (a pink shirt) both keep the single form.
