Why do Italians call any scooter a “vespa”?

Vespa is officially a Piaggio motor-scooter brand launched in 1946, but the bike was so dominant in postwar Italy that vespa became the everyday Italian word for any motor scooter, the way Kleenex works for tissues or Hoover for vacuum cleaners. Italians casually call a Honda or Yamaha scooter a vespa without checking the badge.

This clip is a traffic stop: a vigile (city traffic cop) pulls over a scooter rider with no helmet. The rider offers to go home and get the helmet, but the officer says he can’t take the vespa home. The rider lives sixty kilometers away. The bit works because vespa signals “scooter” with no further explanation.
