What does “dai” mean in Italian?

Spelled like the verb “give” but used as an interjection, “dai!” is one of the most Italian sounds you can make. It can urge (“dai, andiamo!” — come on, let’s go), encourage (“dai, ce la fai” — come on, you can do it), express disbelief (“ma dai!” — no way!), or soften a plea (“dai, ti prego”). Tone does all the work; the word itself barely means anything until you say it.
