What is “vessel cleaning soap” in Indian English?
Indian English uses vessel as the everyday word for cookware: pots, pans, plates, cups, bowls. So vessel cleaning soap is what Americans call dish soap and Britons call washing-up liquid. The choice comes from Indian regional languages, where words like paatra (Sanskrit/Hindi) or paani (Tamil/Malayalam) for cooking and serving items map directly onto English “vessel” rather than the more limited Western use (“a vessel” usually means a ship or formal container). In Indian kitchens, a cleaning lady might be called a vessel-washer, and grocery aisles label dish soap as vessel cleaner.
