What does “settee” mean in British English?

In British English, a settee is a long, soft seat. Two or three people can sit on it. Americans say couch or sofa for the same thing. British people use all three words, but settee sounds very British. It is more common in the north of England. So when a British friend says “Sit on the settee,” they just mean “Sit on the sofa.”

The clip lists things in a room: “There isn’t anybody sitting on the settee either.” You can also use it like this: Come and sit on the settee. It is a normal, everyday home word in Britain.
