What does “fosmaŝino” mean in Esperanto?
Filmed at Lützerath, the German village demolished in 2023 to expand a lignite coal mine, this clip names the giant machines doing the digging: fosmaŝino, built from fosi (“to dig”) plus maŝino (“machine”). Esperanto could have simply borrowed “excavator” the way many languages do (ekskavatoro is also valid) — instead it built a transparent compound anyone who knows the two root words can decode on sight.
Esperanto compounds this way constantly: put two roots next to each other, main meaning last, and you get a new word without inventing new vocabulary — the same principle behind varmondo (heat-wave) elsewhere in this batch. Lützerath itself became a flashpoint for climate protest (Greta Thunberg was arrested there in January 2023) before its coal was mined out regardless — a heavier real-world backdrop than the clip’s own brief, matter-of-fact caption lets on.
