What is the difference between “billetera” and “monedero” in Spanish?

billetera
Spanish word pair
billetera = wallet (for bills), monedero = coin purse (for coins)

Billetera is a wallet — the kind you keep paper money in. The trick is in the word: billete means “banknote,” so a billetera is “the bill holder.” Its partner monedero comes from moneda (“coin”), so a monedero is a coin purse. Learn the two base words and you instantly know which is which, instead of guessing.

This clip lists both side by side. In Spain people often use cartera for a wallet that holds bills and coins together, while billetera is common across Latin America. So ¿Dónde está mi billetera? means “Where is my wallet?”
