What does “tampoco” mean in Spanish?

También means “also” or “too.” Its negative twin is tampoco, which means “not either” or “neither.” So if a friend says no tengo perro (“I don’t have a dog”), you answer yo tampoco (“me neither”). In this clip the speaker says she has no dog or cat y tampoco kids — “and not kids either.” Reach for tampoco any time you want to agree with something negative.

A quick rule: use también to add to a positive idea and tampoco to add to a negative one. Me gusta — a mí también (“I like it — me too”); no me gusta — a mí tampoco (“I don’t like it — me neither”). You can also place it before the verb: tampoco tenemos hijos, exactly as in the clip.
